Last week, my husband and I had the opportunity to check out LA’s latest pop-up restaurant, Saved by the Max, a diner recreated to look exactly like the Max from the 90’s hit show, Saved by the Bell. Anyone remember that show? My husband was obsessed so I thought this would be a fun date night idea. Pop-up restaurants or supper clubs are temporary restaurants that are only around for a certain amount of time. They aren’t going to be around forever, hence the appeal and large amount of ticket sales. Pop-up restaurants are a fun date night idea because it allows you and your date to try out a different restaurant that neither one of you has experienced before and as an added bonus: throw in a bit of nostalgia. Read on for my Saved by The Max experience and take a trip down memory lane for all of you 90’s kids out there.
Saved by the Max really nailed the look of the Max. The colors and the vibe matched the TV show’s almost to a tee. The host sat us at a cozy two-seater table and the waitress greeted us promptly, explained the experience to us, and gave us time to wander and check out all of the decor. The space is separated into two spaces, The Max and Principal Belding’s office. You can buy tickets to sit in either area and either way you can experience all of the decor so it really doesn’t matter where you sit but I would still recommend sitting in the Max because it’s more fun. There are lockers lining the halls displaying props and memorabilia from all of your favorite characters like AC Slater and Kelly Kapowski. There is a bar top with bar stools you can sit at with TV’s playing reruns of Saved by the bell. Moving a little further in the restaurant, there are multiple booths and tables, a jukebox, and old school video games. Everything is bright, neon, and so 90’s. We loved it! Also, there’s a solid 90’s playlist playing in the restaurant. Overall, we thought they did a great job capturing the essence of the Max.
Saved by the Max does a good job providing multiple spots for photo opportunities. Part of the fun of a pop-up restaurant, especially one that is recreated from a tv show, is to take multiple photos in front of props and backdrops. They give you plenty of time to wander and take photos and it’s a lot of fun to be silly with your date. Our favorite backdrops included the lockers, the jukebox, and the banner saying “Bayside Tigers.” Thy also have large, overside heads of your favorite characters to take pictures with. It was a really fun time.
To be honest, most pop-up restaurants that are focused on the decor let their menu fall to the wayside. The Max does a good job creating the diner-like experience with a more upscale twist. Your tickets comes with an appetizer and an entree and it’s fun to order different things and try it all. Our favorite appetizer was the Mac & Screech, although we also tried the Poutine Engel and the Snow White and the Seven Dorks (or chicken wings). For our entrees, we ordered the Bayside Burger and the Kelly Kapowski (a twist on the Monte Cristo sandwich). We also got to try Tori’s Fried Chicken (which was a Korean fried chicken and waffle). For an additional charge, you can order alcoholic beverages and dessert. My husband was the only one to try the drinks since I am currently with child haha and he said those were just ok. We finished off our dining experience with Max’s Magical Sweet Tooth, which was a churro waffle with Vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce. At the end of the evening, we were absolutely stuffed and felt that we definitely got our money’s worth.
I definitely recommend Saved by the Max for all of the Saved by the Bell fans out there and even if you want to just try something new in the LA area. We had a great time and we were in and out in about 90 minutes which was plenty of time to eat and take pictures. Everyone in the restaurant was having a great time and some were even dressed up in 90’s inspired looks. This a great place for a date night or even a fun night out with girlfriends.
