The Prettiest Garnish Around: Tips for Using Edible Flowers in Drinks

08/08/2018

Lately, my favorite way to garnish drinks has been with edible flowers. I can’t think of a prettier garnish and it makes any drink appear feminine and unique. The best part is you don’t need any special skills or cutting tools to add this to your next party. It’s super easy and makes such a fun and girly statement.

So which flowers are edible? You have a couple of choices here. You can either buy pre-packaged edible flowers from you local Whole Foods. But they only stock this item seasonally and it’s hard to predict when exactly they’re going to carry it. Alternatively, you can pick up some organic, edible blooms from your local market and add them yourself. Or you can order online here. Some of my favorite edible flowers include:

-Pansies

-Chamomille

-Nasturtium

-Carnations

-Roses

-Dahlias

-Lilacs

-Hibiscus

-Begonias

-Marigolds

-Orchids

Here are some tips to keep in mind when working with edible flowers:

  1. Look for labels that say food grade, edible, or organic. You don’t want to ingest anything that’s sprayed with pesticides.
  2. Smell or even taste the flowers before you add them to your cocktail. Certain flavors can change the flavor of your drink and not in a good way.
  3. Purchase your flowers on the day of your event or the night before to ensure that you’re using the freshest ingredient possible.
  4. Edible flowers look equally as gorgeous when they’e frozen into ice cubes. This makes such a pretty display when icing a bottle of rose or champagne. Guests can add floral ice cubes to their drink and then garnish with fresh, edible flowers on top.

Would you garnish with fresh flowers at your next party? What’s your favorite flower?
