A few weeks ago, I had the baby shower of my dreams and it was everything I could have ever wanted and more. It was honestly the most beautiful and special day and it meant so much to me to be surrounded by so many important and significant women that have been around me all of my life and now will be a part of Baby Girl’s life.
I had a vision for my shower: I wanted it to feel woodsy but not completely outdoorsy or lumberjack-like (if that makes any sense), I wanted something detailed, floral, and whimsical and I wanted it to be a theme that you don’t see everyday. I love to read and the idea of a storybook or fairy tale theme occurred to me. Since a lot of my favorite fairy tales have woodsy-type settings, I thought it would be the perfect backdrop to incorporate everything I love. Thus, a Once Upon a Time theme was born. I knew I wanted it to be more organic and less childish and cheesy so I entrusted the details to my super talented sister, best friend, and mom to execute. And boy did they deliver. Since at this point I passed the torch to them, I thought I would let my sister explain the rest of the details. There are so many wonderful details that I had to break this post into two parts. This post covers the theme, venue, food and drink, games and guestbook. Part 2 will cover all of the wonderful decor details.
As told by my sister…
When deciding on a theme for Gigi’s baby shower, her best friend and I went to the best source we had: the mother-to be’s Pinterest page of course! Gianna has always loved the idea of having a storybook or fairy tale baby shower for her future baby girl, and we wanted to merge certain ideas from both themes into one for the shower of her dreams! With Gianna’s due date being in mid-October, we knew that a fairy tale theme world work perfectly! Once the two of us picked an invitation that had a castle and the words “Once upon a time” on it, we were all in on the fairy tale theme. We found these gorgeous invites on Etsy, and the shop owner was super sweet and was able to make all the shower games and guestbook calendar in the same design! We also asked guests to bring a book instead of a card to further tie in the fairytale/storybook theme.
The credit for choosing the perfect venue for the baby shower goes to the momma-to-be herself! Being that the shower was to be in early September in Southern California in the middle of a heat wave, we knew we couldn’t do an outdoor shower and needed to find an air conditioned venue that would reflect the theme as best as possible. Enter La Villa Bella in Upland, California! This charming event hall was perfect for Gianna’s special day; the stone walls and high glass windows evoked a greenhouse/cottage in the woods vibes, and we all knew that it would be the best place for the shower. Not to mention the massive greenery and branch chandelier! When we saw that ceiling, we knew that we had found our venue.
For the food, we decided on Gold Standard Catering and the food was delicious! We wanted a menu that was earthy and rich but still elegant. We decided on a mushroom, rosemary thyme and tarragon chicken breast with honey glazed carrots and wild rice pilaf. We also served a spring mix salad with feta cheese, candied walnuts, dried cranberries, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. For bread we chose sliced French baguettes.
The incredible desserts were made by TLC Cakes and Baking Co. Seeing as the mother-to-be had been craving sweets like crazy, we knew we needed an epic dessert table. The incredible spread included Black Magic Chocolate Naked Cake with peanut butter pretzel filing, buttercream frosting and caramel drizzle, French Vanilla Naked Cake with white chocolate marscapone and raspberry filling, buttercream, fresh raspberries and raspberry drizzle, Caramel Apple Rose Tarts, Lemon Meringue Tarts, Macarons, and custom sugar cookies with baby Olivia’s name and initial for the favors! Our taste buds were singing TLC’s praises for days!
For our signature “mocktail” I wanted to keep it simple and refreshing and made a rose lemonade! I simply added rose water to CountryTime pink lemonade and voila! Briar Rose Lemonade, named after Sleeping Beauty of course. The rose water was a nice touch that made this drink stand out more than just regular old pink lemonade. Add some rose petals to the top of the drink dispenser and you have yourself a simple but beautiful signature drink!
Games and Guestbook
We didn’t want to overwhelm guest with too many games but they were able to play a few of the classics including: the “clothespin” game, “match the baby animal to their mother” game, a Mommy/Daddy He Said/She Said game, and shower gift Bingo. Additionally, we held a diaper raffle for the mama-to-be and gave out a prize for that as well. Guests were encouraged to sign this “Guess the Baby’s Due Date Calendar” and this served as both a guestbook and fun activity. I can’t wait to see who guesses right!
Stay tuned for Part 2 for all of the fabulous decor details!
